End-to-end encrypted
Private rooms and direct messages are encrypted on your device. The keys belong to you and the people in the room — not to the server, and not to us.
Checking kaira.email…
Element is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted messenger built on Matrix. kaira.email is your home on that network — your account, your rooms and your keys, reachable from every device you own.
Why Element
No ads, no feed, no engagement tricks. Just a fast, modern messenger where the important things stay obvious: who you're talking to, and where your messages live.
Private rooms and direct messages are encrypted on your device. The keys belong to you and the people in the room — not to the server, and not to us.
Matrix federates like email does. Your account here can join rooms and message people on thousands of other homeservers — no shared platform required.
Call one person or a whole room straight from the app. A relay server runs alongside this homeserver so calls still connect through strict firewalls and mobile networks.
Photos, video, voice notes and documents up to half a gigabyte each, with inline previews and full searchable history on every device.
Group related rooms into a space, keep tangents in threads, pin what matters and search the lot. It scales from two friends to a whole community.
The Element app, the Matrix protocol and the server software are all open source. Anyone can read the code, audit the cryptography and run their own.
One network, many homes
Matrix links independent servers into a single open network — much like email, but for real-time chat. kaira.email is your home server: it holds your account and your keys. From it you can reach anyone else on Matrix, and they can reach you, without either side signing up to the same company.
@you:kaira.email — people can find you from any Matrix app.Everywhere you are
The web app runs in any modern browser with nothing to install. On a phone or desktop, install Element and point it at this server — your rooms, history and keys follow you across all of them.

Questions
Matrix is an open standard for real-time chat, the way SMTP is an open standard for email: independent servers run by different people, all talking to each other. Element is the app you use to reach it, and kaira.email is one of those servers.
Yes, for private rooms and direct messages — Element turns encryption on by default for those, and the keys never leave your devices, so the server stores only ciphertext it cannot read.
Large public rooms are deliberately left unencrypted, on Matrix in general, so that anyone can join and read the history. You can always tell which is which: an encrypted room shows a shield on the composer.
Something like @alice:kaira.email. The first part is the name you pick, the second is this server. That full address is what people on any other Matrix server use to find you.
No. The web app works in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Installing the Element app is optional — worth it mostly for push notifications and a faster start on mobile.
Yes — that's the point of federation. You can message anyone on any Matrix server and join rooms hosted elsewhere, and people elsewhere can do the same with you, using your full @you:kaira.email address.
Creating an account on kaira.email is free.
On this server, and on the servers of anyone else in the room — that is how a federated network delivers a message. In an encrypted room every copy is ciphertext, readable only by the devices in the room.
In an unencrypted room, the server operators involved can read the contents, exactly as they can on any other Matrix server. Keep anything sensitive in an encrypted room.
